Alaska deals Barako Bull first loss to remain perfect, grab solo lead

Renaldo Balkman leads way as Petron plasters Ginebra
The Alaska Aces used a balanced attack to defeat a hard-fighting Barako Bull side, 77-73, and grab the solo lead in the Commissioner’s Cup Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Robert Dozier scored 19 points to lead six players with at least eight points for Alaska, which improved its win-loss mark to 3-0. Barako Bull, which was tied atop the leaderboard with the Aces prior to the game, suffered its first loss to see its record drop to 2-1.

Renaldo Balkman scored 17 of his game-high 34 points in a furious third quarter run as the Petron Blaze Boosters cruised to an easy victory over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 105-90, Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

“The team talked about consistency. We were up and down last conference. This time, we started with a loss, but we came out with a lot of intensity and played with more energy in our last two games. We need to continue to show our intense defensive effort every single game,” said Petron Blaze coach Olsen Racela.

“It’s about time they see the good happenings in this team. Madalas, nakikita ng mga tao yung mga adversities sa team naming kaya nga mayroong Petronovela.”

Rain or Shine breaks away from Meralco late to win out-of-town encounter
Rain or Shine preserved it’s A-grade game in the final three minutes to outlast Meralco, 91-82, in the Phoenix PBA On Tour at the Puerto Princesa Coliseum in Palawan on Saturday night.

The Elasto Painters held the Bolts to just a single field goal in nearly five minutes then unloaded 17 straight points to turn a tight outing into a surprising rout.

De Ocampo’s dagger helps Talk ‘N Text dispatch Air 21, book first semis seat

Justin Williams shines as GlobalPort deals Ginebra second straight defeat
Ranidel De Ocampo hit a cold-blooded three-pointer with less than a minute left for the go-ahead basket in Talk ‘N Text’s thrilling 105-100 triumph over Air 21 in the Philippine Cup quarterfinals Thursday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

De Ocampo’s dagger, which broke the game’s last deadlock at 98-all, helped the versatile forward make up for the previous play that saw him getting blocked by Air 21′s Noy Baclao on a drive to the basket.

Workhorse import Justin Williams posted monster numbers while Sol Mercado registered his third straight double-double performance in a GlobalPort uniform to help the Batang Pier cruise past Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 89-80, in Friday Commissioner’s Cup action at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Williams had 23 points, 23 rebounds, and eight blocks while Mercado finished with 12 points and 13 assists for GlobalPort, which won for the second time in three games.

The Batang Pier bounced back from a tough loss against Barako Bull in its last outing.

Furious finishing kick gives Barako Bull overtime victory over GlobalPort

Dunigan outpowers Hill as Air 21 defeats Ginebra
Barako Bull’s finish kick was so strong, the GlobalPort Batang Pier didn’t quite know what hit them.

The Energy Colas finished the game on a 22-2 run spanning the fourth quarter and overtime period, hacking out a 98-88 victory over GlobalPort Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Barako Bull looked dead in the water trailing by 10 points, 86-76, heading into the two-minute mark of regulation. But the Energy Colas locked down on defense and finished the fourth period with a 10-0 run capped by a three-pointer by a corner three-pointer Mark Macapagal to force overtime.

Barako Bull finished the job in extra time, outscoring GlobalPort, 12-2, for their second straight victory and an early spot atop the Commissioner’s Cup team standings.

Air 21 got the kind of debut it needed from import Michael Dunigan, who finished with 26 points and 19 rebounds as the Express outlasted Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 74-70, in the main game of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.

Dunigan scored 18 points in the second half to rescue Air 21 as he completely outplayed his counterpart Herbert Hill, who scored 17 points but shot a woeful 7-of-24 (24 percent) from the field. The Ginebra import also committed six turnovers.

Hill was held to just two points in the first 24 minutes of play, but picked up his scoring in the second half, as the Gin Kings fought their way back from a 12-point deficit.

But Dunigan conspired with former Ginebra stalwarts Mike Cortez and John Wilson, who scored 13 points apiece, to seal the win for Air 21 in the fourth quarter.

Cyrus Baguio hits buzzer-beating fastbreak layup to tow
Alaska over Rain or Shine

Eric Dawson drops 37 points to carry Meralco over Talk ‘N Text
Cyrus Baguio hit a fastbreak layup in transition to beat the buzzer and give the Alaska Aces an 83-81 victory over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters Saturday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Baguio’s basket capped a thrilling endgame comeback for the Aces, who needed a desperation 25-foot three-pointer from Calvin Abueva to tie the game at 81-all with 10 seconds left in the game.

Rain or Shine set up a play for import Bruno Sundov for its final possession. But the attempt of the 7-foot-3 Croatian was foiled at the basket by Abueva, leading to a loose ball.

Alaska made the loose ball recovery and got the ball to Baguio, who raced downcourt past three Elasto Painters to score the game-winning layup.

Eric Dawson has served notice.

The Meralco import scored 16 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Bolts to an impressive 99-92 victory over the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in the Commissioner’s Cup Saturday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Dawson added 14 rebounds and four blocks for the Bolts, who squandered an 18-point first half lead before recovering in time to turn back the Tropang Texters.

“We played Talk N Text at the right time. They didn’t have extensive practice together and they have two new guys on their roster,” said Ryan Gregorio.

“We, on the other hand, were practicing a long time. Eric has been practicing for us for the past three weeks.”

Best: Sol Mercado gets a double-double, Justin Williams actually has some offense, Gary David erupts for 28, and Japeth Aguilar justifies the playing time. What’s not to like if you’re a Batang Pier?

Worst: Chris Lutz getting injured. It’s confirmed – he has a broken rib. Get well soon, Mr. Lutz. Oh, but if you’re looking for something awful ON THE HARDWOOD, then how about Arwind Santos’s 1-of-9 three-point shooting?

Maybe Japeth was right after all: Aguilar, in his first game after getting traded by Talk N Text, and after his ill-fated stab at an NBA D-League career, scores 16 points, pulls down 9 boards, and blocks 4 shots, including a big one on Jay Washington in the endgame. He was solid down low after Williams was sent off in the third period. Looks like Aladdin got his wish.

Best: The Josh Urbiztondo-Evan Brock connection. That alley-oop early on was mighty nasty, and their combined production wasn’t too shabby as well – 35 points, 21 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals.

Worst: Both Alex Mallari and Mark Barroca tried their hand at playing point guard tonight. Both failed miserably. Their combined stats – 9 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 turnovers, and 5 fouls in 57 minutes. Oh, and 3-of-14 from the field. No wonder Urbiztondo and Jonas Villanueva were smirking all night.

So the guy who advised SMC to let go of Urbiztondo and Villanueva should be looking over his shoulder now: Both those guys used to alternate at the floor general position for SMC/B-Meg, but they got let go – Urbiztondo before this season and Villanueva in-between conferences. If they felt some bitterness, who could blame them, right? Thing is, I don’t think they’re feeling that bitter right now. Uribiztondo continues his rise with a near-double-double, while Villanueva relished in the extended freedom of movement.

Gilas Pilipinas: from PARA SA BAYAN to LABAN NG BAYAN

If we get to the
FIBA WORLD CUP:

Rafe Bartholomew's  "Philippine's unlikely affair with basketball"

needs to have a sequel
that says:

"a Match Made in Heaven"
Picture
The Philippines is became known for boxing because of our fighters making it to the international stage... but then, only a handfull of people in the nation actually box.

If the Philippines finally gets to FIBA World Cup... we become known for BASKETBALL, then that would finally achieve what Rafe Bartholomew has been trying to do... to show the WORLD that the Philippines's  "unlikely affair with basketball" has actually turned out to be a "Match Made in Heaven".

Yesterday, the pool of 17 that will be taking on that extra burden of carrying the nation.

The next 6 months are critical. In the next 3 months, while the Commissioner's Cup is going on, this group will only be meeting once a week. Its a good thing that they have 15 guys who are familiar with of Coach Chot's system, (7 of which play it all year round). Only 2 need to learn it, within the next 3 months, before they go to training camp in Lithuania.

In Lithuania, they are isolated... they are focused... it's their training camp. After this, they go on and spar.

Then they come back and play in the PBA All Star Weekend... going against team who we could almost be sure, would feature other more popular PBA stars. They also play Yao Ming's Shanghai Sharks. They would also invite teams from other middle eastern countries...And finally, they defend the Jones Cup title... before coming back home for the ULTIMATE BATTLE here on our own turf.  As it gets closer, I'm sure the pressure will mount... but unlike preparing for a Championship in the PBA... a loss here will be heartbreaking, not just for them... but for the whole nation. Because this is the LAST CHANCE... to finally break out of Asia, and into the World Stage.

The hardest part of the climb is the push to the summit... where you have to find that extra ounce of energy and drive to overcome all obstacles and get to the top. You are at that part. And when the Final Battle comes... you'll be playing in at atmosphere unlike never before. This time, the WHOLE CROWD will be cheering for you... and unlike a Ginebra vs BMEG in the PBA or an ADMU vs DLSU in the UAAP where half is for, and half is against... this time... EVERYONE - the bands, the streamers, the tshirts, the screams... will all be for you.

We're in this together... We're supporting all the way... Go Gilas! Go Pilipinas!

It's no longer PARA SA BAYAN... it should be LABAN NG BAYAN... #PUSO
