In biggest test of career, Vernon Macklin steps up from free throw line for Ginebra

It was the biggest test in the young professional basketball career of Vernon Macklin.

With a reputation as a poor free throw shooter, the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel import sank two pressure-packed free throws with 11 seconds left in the game to lead Ginebra to a thrilling 81-79 victory over Rain or Shine Monday night.

After the game, Macklin said it was one of the biggest games he has ever played.

Barangay Ginebra made the most out of the good fortune that went its way down the stretch on Wednesday night and repulsed Air21, 90-84, for a fifth straight win that practically assured the Gin Kings a slot in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs.

San Mig Coffee also notched its sixth victory, nipping Talk ‘N Text, 83-82, in the second game.

AKTV Center || Ginebra Import - Vernon Macklin || 03/20/13

Barangay Ginebra's San Miguel's Import was invited to the AKTV Center March 20, 2013. During the double header Wednesday, he was interviewed by Aaron Atayde and Jojo Lastimosa during the halftime and in between game breaks. Questions about his family, his college life, his reaction to the fans, and how he was liking the Philippines were all asked during those segments.

As a finale, he took part of a challenge that had the AKTV Center and all the viewers laughing as the ending credits came up.

My 2 cents on the whole "SMC pulling out of the PBA" issue

3/11/2013

Unfortunately, the incident has been blown out of proportion and has damaged our good name. Already, news of the incident has spread throughout the country and overseas through traditional and online media.

Our reputation is of utmost importance to us because we have worked hard to cultivate this good name through the decades. But it takes only one unfortunate incident like this to undo all our efforts.

As such, given the possible long-term effect of this incident to the San Miguel organization's image, and in consideration of our need to preserve our good reputation, Management has decided to re-evaluate the company’s continuing participation in the PBA.

- excerpts from the statement of San Miguel Corporations'' reaction to the Balkman issue via http://www.twitlonger.com/show/l9aicq
well... all i cud say is... its a chess game... a struggle for power...

Over time, they have acquired 3 of the most popular franchises in the PBA... plus to possible "adopted" ones ... yet, despite all the connivance with getting star players, or changing one team's name to keep a certain org from joining, or hoarding players and not allowing them to play for the national team... they still haven't been able cultivate a team to dominate and win multiple championships like MVP's TNT...

now, the import that has become the key to the success of the Super Team that they've assembled is being sent home, with their hopes for another title with it. carefully laid plans are all going to waste because one Kume refuses to look the other way and allow unfair trades to occur (1st trade proposals vetoed) and this  "lifetime ban" of their super import was the final straw.

I think this is more of a call to the fans, a protest over Kume's unfair call... they scare the fan into thinking that they are gonna pull out unless the Commissioner changes his decision... What do they think the Commissioner will do, apologize for his actions and confess of a "change of heart"?

I suddenly feel sorry for all their players. their careers are now in limbo. and would anyone actually believe that this Balkman incident had anything to do with it? Heck, most of the online articles don't even say San Miguel Corporation... the NBA and the New York Knicks and even Latrell Sprewell is more blatantly talked about then SMC or Petron.

Heck, them not allowing their players to play for Gilas brought greater damage to the corporate identity then this...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now about the Commissioner's Decision:

Kume is concerned about the image of the PBA to the WHOLE WORLD. By doing this, he sends the message that such actions will not be tolerated in our league. Yes it was a very harsh penalty, but at the end of the day, this ensures that NO IMPORT could EVER treat ANYONE like that EVER AGAIN.

The penalty/punishment looses its effectivity if it is not something to be feared.

If this was not done, the stigma will always stick to the PBA that it is a soft league. Remember, the whole world already knows about this... and most of them agree to what was done.

and that's the harsh reality.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just my 2 cents. Not necessarily yours. From a fan who just began to look deeper into WHY the Powerade Tigers "Tigerella" team was disbanded that way... who was frustrated that shocking rumours turned out to be a reality... was disgusted of the blatant disregard to help the national team... and now, is wary of what this supposed "re-evaluation" (an implied threat of withdrawal) could mean for this league that represents one of our core identities as a people (tama ba ako, Tio Paeng?).

Alaska deals Barako Bull first loss to remain perfect, grab solo lead

Renaldo Balkman leads way as Petron plasters Ginebra
The Alaska Aces used a balanced attack to defeat a hard-fighting Barako Bull side, 77-73, and grab the solo lead in the Commissioner’s Cup Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Robert Dozier scored 19 points to lead six players with at least eight points for Alaska, which improved its win-loss mark to 3-0. Barako Bull, which was tied atop the leaderboard with the Aces prior to the game, suffered its first loss to see its record drop to 2-1.

Renaldo Balkman scored 17 of his game-high 34 points in a furious third quarter run as the Petron Blaze Boosters cruised to an easy victory over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 105-90, Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

“The team talked about consistency. We were up and down last conference. This time, we started with a loss, but we came out with a lot of intensity and played with more energy in our last two games. We need to continue to show our intense defensive effort every single game,” said Petron Blaze coach Olsen Racela.

“It’s about time they see the good happenings in this team. Madalas, nakikita ng mga tao yung mga adversities sa team naming kaya nga mayroong Petronovela.”
